How do I Track "Day" Flight Time?

What? you don’t want to subtract your night time from your total time with a calculator? :)

Every step of the way with LogTen Pro is designed to save you time with data entry. In the interest of minimizes workload, you generally only have to enter the total time for the flight! If you're doing commercial operations, then usually you just enter the Out and In times, which calculates the total, or if you're doing general aviation you might choose to enter Hobbs Out and Hobbs In which would also calculate the total time. We treat Day time as a portion of Total time in the various columns. Therefore all of our reports that show a separated Day column do the math for you by taking the total value, subtracting the night value to get a day value.

Never enter day times in LogTen Pro!

Day times are automatically tracked by default when you enter your total time and night time. So remember that each time in LogTen, such as PIC/P1 or Dual Received should be the TOTAL time that you were PIC on the flight, NOT just the day portion; then just enter any night time and the day values will be calculated automatically on reports that need them such as the Transport Canada or South African logbooks.

If you log Out and In times then the night time is calculated for you as well.

Use auto enter times to speed data entry

You can also tell LogTen Pro to automatically set this value when you enter a total time for a flight. Select the “Time” tab in the Flight Detail view and at the top right press the “Show Auto Enter Times” button. Checkboxes will appear next to all your time values. Tick the ones you would like to be automatically updated when the total time changes (you can always override the value if you want it to be different from the total time).

Example 1:

You have a flight in which you flew 2.0 Total time. All of that was with an instructor. 1.0 hour of that flight occurred at night. So the data you would enter for that case is 2.0 Total Time, 2.0 Dual Received and 1.0 Night. LogTen Pro will programmatically figure out that there should also be 1.0 Dual Received Night.

Example 2:

For a flight where you are trying to enter in Day PIC, then think of the PIC field as total for data entry. So if you flew a 3.3 flight, all of that with you being sole manipulator of the controls, you would also enter in 3.3 in PIC field. But, if 1.2 of that was at Night, then enter in 1.2 in the Night field. LogTen Pro will programmatically figure out that also 1.2 of that was P1 Night. And, in the reports it will figure out that your Day PIC = Total PIC (3.3) - P1 Night (1.2), which results in 2.1 Day PIC.

NOTE:

The manual entry of P1 Night and P2 Night fields is only required in the rare cases of long haul or military flights where a portion of your flying was PIC and another was SIC and it also happened to span across both day and night. In this case LogTen Pro can not programmatically figure out the appropriate values, therefore resulting in the user needing to manually enter values for P1 Night and P2 Night, etc.
